CV Formatting

Formatting that makes your CV easier to read

Small layout decisions that make a big difference to how your CV lands.

01

Margins of 0.5" to 1"

Tighter looks cramped. Wider wastes space. Aim for a comfortable, consistent border on all sides.

02

Body text 10.5–12 pt

Never below 10.5 pt. If a recruiter has to zoom in, they'll stop reading.

03

One font family

Sans-serif for most roles. Serif for academic, legal, and traditional contexts. Never mix.

04

Left-align everything (mostly)

Except your name and contact block, which can be centered. Never justify text — it creates uneven spacing.

05

Space between sections is larger than between lines

This single rule improves scanability more than any design trick.

06

One accent color maximum

For headings or a single rule. Two or more colors looks like a template, not a document.

07

Export as text-based PDF

Not a scan. Select the text — if you can't, the recruiter can't either.
